Study: James Bond at risk of early death from alcohol

James Bond is a lush

Excluding excessive gunfire and the one time a thug beat his testicles with a knotted rope, researchers have determined that something else entirely could push James Bond to an early grave.

Alcohol.

In a study released in the British Medical Journal’s Christmas edition, it was found that Bond’s alcohol allowance was a staggering 92 drinks a week. That’s over four times the recommended amount. Researchers got the numbers by reading Ian Fleming’s novels and detailing every drink the MI6 agent had ever taken.

“We were struck, while reading the original James Bond books, that his alcohol consumption seemed rather high and wondered whether he would realistically have the capacity to perform (in all aspects of his life) at his high level of alcohol intake,” the study reads. “Previous analyses of Bond’s drinking behaviour have examined the types of alcohol he has drunk and the total number of drinks but have never studied the number of units of alcohol this represents and the potential health effects of this.”

It was determined that Bond’s level of alcohol intake puts him at high risk of alcohol-related diseases, like cirrhosis. There’s also impotence, which in Bond’s line of work, means Pussy Galore might have to look elsewhere for sexual sustenance.

And his signature drink: “vodka, shaken not stirred” may actually be because he is physically incapable of stirring his drinks. Alcohol induced tremors are serious business indeed.
